Joel M. Koppenhoefer is an associate at Cunningham, Meyer & Vedrine who focuses his practice on healthcare, professional liability and commercial litigation.

Joel is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer. Over the course of his career he has prosecuted and defended multimillion-dollar and other high-stakes litigation matters in state and federal courts throughout the country.


Joel is an active member of the Chicago Bar Association, including serving on the International Law Committee, Tort Litigation Committee, Civil Rights & Constitutional Law Committee and the Health Care Law Committee. He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Catholic Lawyers Guild.

Mathis v. Defendant Correctional Physicians and Nurse, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, obtained summary judgment on behalf of correctional physicians and nurse in suit alleging deliberate indifference to inmate’s infection.

Smith v. Defendant Correctional Physician, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, obtained jury verdict on behalf of correctional physician accused of deliberate indifference in the care of a pre-trial detainee.

Kaszuba v. Defendant Medical Director, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, obtained summary judgment on behalf of medical director of prison in inmate’s civil rights action predicated upon alleged deliberate indifference to serious medical need.

M.E.P.CAD v. SimplexGrinnell,Clark County, Nevada District Court, Case No. A569111, part of team that obtained a $12M jury verdict on behalf of a software developer in a breach of contract matter concerning custom-designed computer-aided-drafting software.

Hicks v. Defendant Hospital and Physicians, Cook County, Illinois Circuit Court, obtained summary judgment on behalf of hospital and employed physicians in medical malpractice action where patient alleged undiagnosed infection with resultant hearing loss.

Anderson v. Defendant and Employer, Cook County, Illinois Circuit Court, obtained summary judgment on behalf of surgeon and employer in medical malpractice action where patient alleged negligent performance of mastectomy.

Sykes v. Norwood Park Chamber of Commerce & Industry, et al., Cook County, Illinois Circuit Court, Case No. 00 L 012283, successfully defended million-dollar defamation suit at jury trial.

Kopczick v. Hobart Corp., Appellate Court of Illinois, Third District, Case No. 3-98-0465, 721 N.E.2d 769 (1999), successfully appealed a $20M product liability damages award on behalf of commercial kitchen product manufacturer.
