Attorneys Kevin J. Vedrine and Christopher J. Solfa successfully defended an anesthesiologist and his corporation in a medical malpractice trial in Kane County, Illinois before Judge Mark Pheanis. Plaintiff alleged that the conduct of the anesthesiologist, a general surgeon and a cardiologist caused the death of a 36-year old female. The patient arrived at the hospital with acute appendicitis and in need of an appendectomy. The patient had been previously diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and had voluntarily stopped taking her prescribed medications for her hyperthyroidism before her presentation to the hospital. Plaintiff asserted that, based upon the patient’s condition post-operatively, the anesthesiologist was negligent in not advocating for the patient to be admitted to the ICU or, alternatively, maintaining the patient in the PACU. The 2 ½ week trial ended April 17, 2019. In closing arguments, Plaintiff’s counsel asked the jury to award $7.9 to $8.6 million in damages. After deliberating for an hour, the jury returned a not guilty verdict as to all Defendants.
